sefton waterworks pavilion
Location: Sefton, Merseyside
Budget: £250k
Client: New Heartlands
Size: 300m²
Invited design submission for a watersports pavilion to the Leeds-Liverpool canal. The design is configured for rapid fabrication and erection, in partnership with lighting gantry and polymeric envelope fabricators, and has attracted by far the majority of public support. The expression of the façade screens is suggestive, but could be left for local arts agencies to programme on a scrolling basis.
We translated the developing brief into a rational but flexible design, which could be franchised to other leisure uses such as mountain biking, sand yachting and compact aerial pursuits. The building is transported on 2no. conventional flat loading 4WD trucks, and should be constructed by a four-man crew within four days. It entails virtually no site disturbance, and with insubstantial energy requirements will be self-sufficient on almost any site.
